United Way, FamilyWize announce savings in prescription costs

RACINE — The people living and working in Racine County have saved more than $500,000 on everyday prescription costs, thanks to the United Way and FamilyWize partnership.

The free FamilyWize drug savings card is distributed locally by United Way of Racine County and more than 6,000 local residents have benefitted from the savings.

“No one should be forced to choose between paying for food, rent or medicine because of the high cost of prescriptions. That’s why we’ve partnered with FamilyWize to distribute free prescription savings cards for everyone in Racine County”, said Rodney Prunty, president of United Way of Racine County.

Distributed through United Ways, the FamilyWize card lowers the cost of medicine by an average of 40 percent or more for people without insurance or who take medications not covered by their plan. One thousand United Ways in all 50 states have helped to save $580 million on prescriptions in their communities as of November 2013. This year alone, individuals have saved more than $172,000 throughout Racine County.

“The FamilyWize card provides immediate savings on prescription medicines with no paperwork or forms to fill out,” said Susan Gilmore, executive director of Community Engagement for The FamilyWize Community Service Partnership.

These cards can be used by everyone in the community, not just people without insurance. They can even be used by people with health benefits, including Medicaid or Medicare. The FamilyWize card is easy to use:

• It’s free.
• There is no enrollment or personal information needed.
• It has immediate and unlimited usage.
• It is accepted at 95 percent of pharmacies nationwide.
• The FamilyWize card is similar to a coupon that can be used every time a prescription is filled.
• Simply present the card at a local pharmacy to get the savings.
